Josefstadt, small but magnificent!

The suburb of the nobles, craftsmen and artists

Vienna's smallest district impresses with its density of pubs, palaces, alternative shops and handicraft businesses. Already used by the Romans as a transit area, the area was redeveloped by Josef I at the end of the 17th century. We stroll together along rows of Josephinian houses, through Biedermeier alleys, marvel at courtyards from 1700 and visit the baroque Piarist Church Maria Treu with its wonderful ceiling frescoes. We pass the Theater in der Josefstadt, Vienna's oldest theatre, and continue to Palais Auersperg, which opens its baroque gardens as a restaurant in the summer months. There we end the tour with a drink.
